I'm here to open a door, to take my reign. long may it be PERSONALITYProud "Clever... but not enough that I have to respect it." Lucien cannot stand being made a fool. He's touchy about who he is, who people think he is, and he goes to great lengths to maintain control of his image. When the Mighty Nein try to pry into his history, he's sharp and refuses to discuss a lonely and painful childhood in Shady Creek Run, abruptly ending the conversation with a warning not to ask again. At several points throughout their association, the Nein mention ridiculous and embarrassing things that Mollymauk - the previous inhabitant of Lucien's body - did and every time Lucien vehemently denies that he had anything to do with "That aberration" who controlled his body for a time, even though Mollymauk was a fragment of his own personality. In more practical ways, his pride prevents him from admitting that he is lost until the Nein press him on the fact that they have apparently gone in a circle. Lucien also needs an audience. He is the villain who wants to monologue and tell the heroes the brilliance of his plan, have them recognize the height of his power, and he can deliver one hell of a speech. But, as with every prideful creature, his tight control over this perception also means that once someone finds cracks in his armor, it is painfully easy to get beneath them and start to rip him apart. He gets careless and violent once he's prodded the right way, and that ultimately has the power to get him off course. His propensity for underestimating those he does not value is a part of this flaw, and he is annoyed when he realizes how much he has mistaken the tenacity and talent of the heroes poised to topple him. Ambitious "I'm here to open a door. To take my reign, long may it be." To become a member of the Claret Orders as a Blood Hunter is no small thing, and while Lucien had determination enough to do this, he eventually wanted more than a life serving the order could give him. He struck out with his Tombtakers, becoming mercenary explorer and treasure hunter, but always with a goal in mind: everything he does is to get him closer to it. Ever since reading that book, ever since the eyes started appearing on his body and ever since the voices started to whisper in his mind, he has been driven to find a way to the Somnovem, to bring them into the Material Plane and set them free. Even death could not stop his drive. Not for long, anyway. Lucien's scheming gains him powerful allies and enemies, and among those who follow him, at least one sees him as a god: Cree, the cleric of their group, uses a vial of Lucien's blood as her holy item and a focus for her power. Lucien's goals are nothing short of reshaping the world and finding himself at the top where once he was at the very bottom. The closer he gets to his goal, it shifts. Rather than setting the Somnovem free, he wants to harness them - replace them - and have the power they have built for himself. And he has spent the better part of his return to the world laying his plans. Ruthless "I'd invite you to stay for the show, but I think you'd prefer to run." In the end, the people in Lucien's life are tools in his hands. He will keep them close until they no longer serve them or until they cross him, and then he will see their end one way or another. Cree, his most loyal follower, is a prime example of this. Without her, Lucien might have stayed dead and scattered forever, but she is the one who brought him back to set him on his path again, and she has been his strongest supporter - both in her belief in him and in her service as a cleric. In her final confrontation with the Mighty Nein, she calls out to Lucien to help her when she realizes she may lose the fight. Lucien's response was to transform her into a horrific flesh creature to continue the fight against the party so that Lucien would have more time to enact his plans. Charming "I'm giving you the opportunity to be a friend and help us." He can be so very personable when he wants to be. Lucien's charm is warm and it can be incredibly endearing: the Nein want to like him, uncertain as they are. This charisma is something he shared with the personality of Mollymauk, but Lucien's approach to being charming is smoother, more precise, and usually more successful. He can build people up - he's become a leader through this ability to influence people and they look up to him, give him their loyalty. Even in his worst moments, the people who care about him see something in him that keeps them going, even if Lucien no longer believes it's there himself, even if he would rather it be smothered beneath his ambitions. BACKGROUND [SPOILERS]Lucien began his life as part of a family of traveling performers. Things weren't perfect, but they had each other. He was especially close to his little sister. After a series of tragedies left he and Aldreda orphans, they scratched out a living in Shadycreek Run. As soon as he could Lucien made sure his sister was able to leave in hopes of finding a better life; he stayed in the Run, hoping to join her someday. Eventually he left the Run with close friends Brevyn and Cree, and together they found their way to the Claret Orders. They trained in the taboo arts of blood magic and became Hunters in the Ghostslayer Order. The work was decent, but Lucien came to believe that the order was clouded in their thinking and wanted to seek a different path. Breaking off, he took a splinter group including Cree and Brevyn back north to Shadycreek Run and started the Tombtakers. In 833 PD, while working for Vess DeRogna, Lucien acquired a mysterious tome, a journal. When he began looking into it, it looked back at him. At that point, he became the Nonagon, and "Lucien" was only a costume he continued to wear. The Somnovem came to him in dreams and showed him the city in the Astral Plane, a collection of minds becoming one under the Eyes of Nine. They bestowed on him the eyes marking his body, one by one. The tome contained a ritual spell required to reach the Somnovem, but Lucien understood it only partially. He reached out to DeRogna, a notable member of the Cerberus Assembly, for her help in understanding it. She came to oversee and perform the ritual for him. DeRogna told the Tombtakers that it would be hard to tell immediately whether or not the ritual had succeeded. The ritual was performed, but DeRogna intentionally failed. When the Tombtakers checked, Lucien was not breathing, and his spirit had been broken and scattered. The group waited until dawn, and believed the ritual had failed and Lucien was dead. Lucien had told them that if anything were to go wrong, they had to get rid of any sign, any trace. So, they buried him and went their separate ways. The mage woman took the tome as part of the arrangement Lucien had with her. Part of his spirit remained in his body, but retained no memories of his previous life. He woke up and dug himself out of the grave, then began a new life as Mollymauk Tealeaf. Some time later, he was killed by Lorenzo during a failed rescue mission. The Mighty Nein buried his body, and informed Cree of his death the next time they ran into her. Realizing Lucien's body was "free", Cree headed to Molly's grave. The Somnovem had put back together the shattered pieces of his spirit and Cree was able to bring Lucien back to life. They gathered other members of the Tombtakers and headed north towards Eiselcross. ABILITIESAs a tiefling, Lucien as dark vision, some low-level spells he can cast at will, and a resistance to fire damage. The red eyes that Lucien has on his body grant him abilities listed below: First eye: Mild telepathy with others (120 feet) Second eye: Darkvision Third eye: Ability to see through illusions Fourth eye: Ability to see into the ethereal plane Fifth eye: Ability to scry into the "eye" of another Sixth eye: Ability to sense all beings with minds (300 feet) Seventh eye: Rend Mind: Recharging melee attack that deals 10d10 psychic damage Eighth eye: Ability to control the minds of others with "eyes" Ninth eye: 30-foot antimagic cone that dispels rather than suppresses magic Lucien is an Blood Hunter and his magic is basically blood-based. He is limited in how and when he can use them and none of his abilities are game-breaking; he can and does do damage to himself when using some of his magic. Hunter's Bane: Lucien has advantage when he is tracking fey, fiends, or undead; he is also able to recall information about such creatures if he has learned about them. The Hunter’s Bane also empowers his body to control and shape hemocraft magic, using his own blood and life essence to fuel his abilities. "Absolutely batty. Brilliant, though. Quite brilliant. Beings-- a being? It's hard to find the right terminology. (sighs) Dreams and imagination. They have power over matter in the astral realm. And when the greatest imaginations become one and only know suffering over a thousand years. Well, that builds into an extraordinary being without focus. Unstoppable force driven by instinct. It's dangerous, all right. But those with imagination, the things I can imagine for them. How about you?" (About the Somnovem) transcript

« Appearance: Lucien is a lavender-skinned tiefling with red eyes and curling horns. He has freckles and nine eye tattoos scattered on his body, which have been integrated into other tattoos that Mollymauk Tealeaf had had done while he was in control of Lucien's body. Lucien has many scars, many of which are self-inflicted in order to do a kind of blood magic.
« Voice: Sample here; a pleasant Irish accent, voiced by Matthew Mercer
« Body hair: Relatively smooth but he's got a nice little trail down from his navel if he doesn't shave it.
« Scent: warm spices, wood smoke, leather; sweat and musk if he's been exerting himself
« Clothes: Lucien likes deep v-neck shirts in canon, as he thinks they make him look dashing and they show off some of his assets. This trend has continued in Duplicity with even more variety. Lucien generally dresses to be comfortable while showing off his figure a bit. He's equal opportunity in the kinds of clothes he wears and though he tends to lean more "masculine" presenting, that's not a fast rule.
« Scars: Many. Most of them are thin, long scars on his arms and torso, done by him to activate blood rites. He has a prominent, jagged scar running parallel to his sternum.
« Piercings: He had some that he's let close up. He could be convinced to get them done again.
« Tattoos: Many. References here.
« Other bodily markings: Hidden among the very colorful tattoos are nine red eyes.
« Other notable physical details: Lucien has curling horns and a tail with a spade on the end.
« Dominant/Submissive: Submissive
« Feelings on their position?: He's not thrilled, but he's making it work for him as best he can. He resents the lack of freedom without a contract.

« Occupation: Works at Scratch's Gym and his considering applying at the Scratch
« Vices of choice: Occasional drugs, drinking; he likes sex and in particular indulges in rough sex (giving or receiving) when he's in a mood.

« Other daily habits: Lucien spends part of most mornings stretching and he'll typically do it again at night if he's not jumping into bed with someone. He's at the gym most days, though he doesn't always work out.
« Sleeping habits: He doesn't. Well, that was the case before Duplicity. Since dying and coming back, he tends to catch a few hours at a time here and there. He prefers sleeping with a partner if he can swing it, but he won't beg.
« « « DIRTY SECTION » » »
« Sexual preference: Before he became the Nonagon Lucien had a very active love life and since coming to Duplicity he's rediscovered it. He's an opportunistic bisexual and will fuck whoever suits his fancy at the time.
