Name: Lucien
Door: door pass - submissive

Canon: Critical Role, Campaign 2
Canon Point: Episode 138

Age: Exact age unknown, but estimated to be in his mid/late-20s
Appearance: here; Lucien has 9 red eyes on his body that are not tattoos, nor are they organic eyes.

History: here

Personality:

Proud
"Clever... but not enough that I have to respect it."

Lucien cannot stand being made a fool. He's touchy about who he is, who people think he is, and he goes to great lengths to maintain control of his image. When the Mighty Nein try to pry into his history, he's sharp and refuses to discuss a lonely and painful childhood in Shady Creek Run, abruptly ending the conversation with a warning not to ask again. At several points throughout their association, the Nein mention ridiculous and embarrassing things that Mollymauk - the previous inhabitant of Lucien's body - did and every time Lucien vehemently denies that he had anything to do with "That aberration" who controlled his body for a time, even though Mollymauk was a fragment of his own personality. In more practical ways, his pride prevents him from admitting that he is lost until the Nein press him on the fact that they have apparently gone in a circle. Lucien also needs an audience. He is the villain who wants to monologue and tell the heroes the brilliance of his plan, have them recognize the height of his power, and he can deliver one hell of a speech. But, as with every prideful creature, his tight control over this perception also means that once someone finds cracks in his armor, it is painfully easy to get beneath them and start to rip him apart. He gets careless and violent once he's prodded the right way, and that ultimately has the power to get him off course. His propensity for underestimating those he does not value is a part of this flaw, and he is annoyed when he realizes how much he has mistaken the tenacity and talent of the heroes poised to topple him.

Ambitious
"I'm here to open a door. To take my reign, long may it be."

To become a member of the Claret Orders as a Blood Hunter is no small thing, and while Lucien had determination enough to do this, he eventually wanted more than a life serving the order could give him. He struck out with his Tombtakers, becoming mercenary explorer and treasure hunter, but always with a goal in mind: everything he does is to get him closer to it. Ever since reading that book, ever since the eyes started appearing on his body and ever since the voices started to whisper in his mind, he has been driven to find a way to the Somnovem, to bring them into the Material Plane and set them free. Even death could not stop his drive. Not for long, anyway. Lucien's scheming gains him powerful allies and enemies, and among those who follow him, at least one sees him as a god: Cree, the cleric of their group, uses a vial of Lucien's blood as her holy item and a focus for her power. Lucien's goals are nothing short of reshaping the world and finding himself at the top where once he was at the very bottom. The closer he gets to his goal, it shifts. Rather than setting the Somnovem free, he wants to harness them - replace them - and have the power they have built for himself. And he has spent the better part of his return to the world laying his plans.

Ruthless
"I'd invite you to stay for the show, but I think you'd prefer to run."

In the end, the people in Lucien's life are tools in his hands. He will keep them close until they no longer serve them or until they cross him, and then he will see their end one way or another. Cree, his most loyal follower, is a prime example of this. Without her, Lucien might have stayed dead and scattered forever, but she is the one who brought him back to set him on his path again, and she has been his strongest supporter - both in her belief in him and in her service as a cleric. In her final confrontation with the Mighty Nein, she calls out to Lucien to help her when she realizes she may lose the fight. Lucien's response was to transform her into a horrific flesh creature to continue the fight against the party so that Lucien would have more time to enact his plans.

Charming
"I'm giving you the opportunity to be a friend and help us."

He can be so very personable when he wants to be. Lucien's charm is warm and it can be incredibly endearing: the Nein want to like him, uncertain as they are. This charisma is something he shared with the personality of Mollymauk, but Lucien's approach to being charming is smoother, more precise, and usually more successful. He can build people up - he's become a leader through this ability to influence people and they look up to him, give him their loyalty. Even in his worst moments, the people who care about him see something in him that keeps them going, even if Lucien no longer believes it's there himself, even if he would rather it be smothered beneath his ambitions.

Powers and Abilities: Happy to nerf however I need to. This is an overview of some of the magic/abilities he has at his disposal. Some, like his tiefling abilities, he has by virtue of what he is. The rest is through training and being connected to a more powerful being. As a tiefling, Lucien as dark vision, some low-level spells he can cast at will, and a resistance to fire damage.

The red eyes that Lucien has on his body grant him abilities listed below:

First eye: Mild telepathy with others bearing eyes (120 feet)
Second eye: Darkvision
Third eye: Ability to see through illusions; This will not work on City-effects
Fourth eye: Ability to see into the ethereal plane; Limited in Duplicity
Fifth eye: Ability to scry into the "eye" of another; Limited to player characters who have consented to have an eye
Sixth eye: Ability to sense all beings with minds (300 feet)
Seventh eye: Rend Mind: Recharging melee attack that deals 10d10 psychic damage
Eighth eye: Ability to control the minds of others with "eyes"; Limited to player characters who have consented
Ninth eye: 30-foot antimagic cone that dispels rather than suppresses magic; Will have limited or no impact on City-based effects

Lucien is an Blood Hunter and his magic is basically blood-based. He is limited in how and when he can use them and none of his abilities are game-breaking; he can and does do damage to himself when using some of his magic.
Hunter's Bane: Lucien has advantage when he is tracking fey, fiends, or undead; he is also able to recall information about such creatures if he has learned about them. The Hunter’s Bane also empowers his body to control and shape hemocraft magic, using his own blood and life essence to fuel his abilities.

Blood Maledict: This is the ability to channel—or sometimes sacrifice—a part of his vital essence to curse and manipulate creatures through hemocraft magic; he can cast 5 times and will not be able to do it again until he rests.

Crimson Rite: This rite infuses a blood hunter's weapon with elemental energy; while the rite is in effect, the weapon is magic and deals additional damage; the rite effect lasts until he finishes a long or short rest. The rites Lucien knows are listed below.

Rite of the Frozen (Cold damage)
Rite of the Flame (Fire damage)
Rite of the Oracle (Psychic damage)
Rite of the Dawn (Radiant/holy damage)

Subclass: Order of the Ghostslayer
Curse Specialist: this allows Lucien an additional use of Blood Maledict for a total of 5 per rest.

Ethereal Step: Lucien can magically step into the veil between the planes; when he does this, he can move through other creatures and objects; he takes damage if he ends up inside an object. He cannot use this to escape City prisons or confinement.

Brand of Sundering: boosts the effects of Brand of Castigation; this exposes a fragment of his opponent's essence, leaving them vulnerable to his Crimson Rite feature. This will not work against City officials.

Blood Curse of the Exorcist: Lucien can break a spell on a creature he can see if it is under a supernatural influence that makes it more susceptible to being charmed, frightened, or possessed. This will not work on City-created influences.

Brand of Castigation: when Lucien has a weapon with an active Crimson Rite, he can use blood magic to sear an arcane brand into that creature; once done, he always knows the direction to the branded creature as long as it’s on the same plane as you. Each time the branded creature deals damage to him or a creature you can see within 5 feet of you, the branded creature takes psychic damage. These brands can potentially be dispelled by others.

Grim Psychometry: Lucien has supernatural talent for discerning the secrets surrounding mysterious relics or places touched by evil.

Brand of Tethering: the psychic damage from his Brand of Castigation increases; additionally, if a branded creature attempts to teleport, it takes psychic damage and may fail to escape. Will only be able to do this with player consent.

Hardened Soul: Lucien is more difficult to charm or frighten by magical means. This will not work on City-created conditions.
